Where I was Last Week

Homemade Blueberry Jam is Delicious

Ever been so happy you felt like you could burst?  For no apparent reason?  I feel that way today.  I could hop and skip my day away.  Life is good, I think I will make a cup of tea.

I decided to make muffins and jam with the blueberries.

Ode to a Coffee Mug

A few Christmases ago, I was given a beautiful coffee mug from one of my students.  It is from Pier One and is cream, grey-blue, black, and olive green.  It sort of has an art deco feel to it.  I love it, and decided to redo my bedroom with this as my inspiration.

Sights, Sounds, and Smells

I am sitting looking at recipes for blueberries.  I bought an assortment of things at a local fruit/vegetable stand.  I just ate some corn that I cut off the cob and roasted with a little olive oil and salt.  I ate that and some squash and zucchini for lunch.  So Good!

I can hear the Blue Angels above me.  There is a show in a few days, so went outside and caught a glimpse of them.

Scones, muffins, pie-oh my!  I can't decide what to make with the fresh blueberries.

There is something about the journey home that makes you happy to finally get there.  I hate the idea of vacation ending, but is nice to get home.  We enjoyed our Key West adventure.

One of my college buddies, and a great friend who happened to be one of my summer missionary partners back in the day, had a baby girl today!  How cool is that?

More Cuban Food

We went back for more, we had dinner at the same place two nights in a row.  It was just as good tonight.  I had the Roast Beef tonight with black beans, yellow rice, and plantains.  We had flan for dessert.  I am stuffed.  It is so good.  Josh had the Cuban mix sandwich, which they were out of last night.  What is it about the cafe con leche that is so much better than regular coffee with milk?  It is wonderful.

Best Food in Town

This restaurant has been voted the Best Cuban Restaurant on the Island for the past 14 years.  We went 10 years ago, and we have being talking about it since.  This place is why I love Cuban food.

It isn't a place you just walk by, you have to know where it is.  The manager at the B&B where we stayed on our honeymoon told us about it.  It is a long walk from where we are staying, so we took at taxi last night.

Last night I had Cafe con leche, Roasted Pork, Plantains, Black Beans and Yellow Rice, and at least my share of Cuban Bread.  I wish I had some leftovers for Breakfast--it was that good.

Ten Years Later...

This is where we spent our Honeymoon.  It was a beautiful place.  It will be 10 years next month! We went by and showed the girls.  Delaney took this photograph of us!

Me and Cuba

I have an odd love affair with Cuba.  It began after I spent our honeymoon in Key West.

Today, we went to a museum of Cuban culture/heritage.  The building was used at one time as a school to teach the children of Cuban immigrants years ago.  The building was built in 1924 using all Cuban materials.  I love the tiles.

While there, we watched a video that was various clips from Cuban movies and Tourism ads from the 1950s.  They also have a raft used by some immigrants to reach the United States.  They were rescued by the US Coast Guard.  The sight of the small raft and a photo of 8 or more men on it left an impression on me.  The were wearing crude life vests with the equivalent of We are nothing without Christ written on them.  I can't imagine feeling so helpless to risk everything for a chance to escape.

Hemingway and those crazy cats of his...

Hemingway had a cat who had an extra toe, this was supposed to bring good luck.  There are still cats on the property with this extra toe.  It sort of looks like a thumb.  The girls loved the cats. There are 51 cats living on the property.  The guides all refer to them by name.  The guide said, don't you know all your coworkers names?

The house is amazing.  This is the number one tourist attraction in Key West.  I am not surprised.  We have been every visit.  I seem to learn something new every tour.  Hemingway purchased the house for $8000.

Where's A Woman Going Crazy on Caroline Street...

Ok, so some of you know that is my favorite Jimmy Buffett song.  I am not of the crazy by nature, so this is a stretch.  I was at least a semi odd acting woman on Caroline Street.

A simple cup of tea

I thought a cup of tea would be nice... the power went out.  We had to call someone to find the right breaker switch.  So, blow dryer, air conditioner units--OK.  Adding a microwave to the mix--not so good.

Made it to Key West

We are here!   We drove through the Keys and enjoyed the drive.  We stopped at Bahai Honda State Park and swam.  The sand and water were amazing.  It was the softest feeling sand I have ever felt.   The water was almost teal colored.  It was beautiful.  It was a rainy day, but we were able to put the top down on the convertible enough to make it worth the extra expense.

We made it down to Key West and found our place.  We walked up to Duval St. and ate at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville Restaurant.  Delaney had a Cheeseburger in Paradise.  Claire really wanted a toy parrot from the gift shop.  I looked around a bit, but didn't see anything I couldn't live without.  I didn't get a t shirt at the Atlanta concert,  I thought maybe I would find one here.  I didn't seeing one tonight.  I am picky about my JB shirts.

The girls are hoping to see some six toed cats tomorrow.

The time is just barely lazily passing by today!

Good news, my package came today!  My neighbor doesn't have to get it for me.  I ordered the girls the cutest towels from Lands End.

waiting for vacation

I am an impatient person.  Two more hours... we are packed, loaded, and ready to go.  I can think of nothing else to do.  I am not good at waiting...

Reflections on Life

Yesterday, I held a baby.  He is around three weeks old.  He is beautiful.  Precious baby feet, I love the baby feet.  It reminded me of the mystery of creation. This baby was created, grew, and was born--everything happened the way it was intended too.  I am still amazed by it.

I remember gazing my girls when they were newborn.  I would look at them, and be amazed that they had once been inside of me.  All of the kicking, rolling, and hiccuping had been felt within. In an instant it seemed beyond comprehension.  This whole person had once been apart of me?  It really is amazing.

Life is Complex

I am amazed at both the complexity and fragile nature of Life.

Closets, Food, and Sadness

Odd combo huh?  Well I am in the midst of a huge project dealing with my closet.  I am taking everything out, sorting, tossing, and organizing what is left.  This means, big mess--for a while, and hopefully less mess in the long run.

My friend's mom died Sunday.  Since then, I have been trying to help in whatever ways I can.  Taking food and organizing others to do the same seems to be something I can do.   They are good people.  I know I can't lessen the pain, but it feels good to do something.

Childhood Thoughts

I love Mr. Rogers.  I stumbled across this today that I decided to share.  The video makes me think of my kids and the kids I teach.  I think Mr. Rogers had a lot of great ideas.  He entertained kids in a calm and loving manner.

We loved Mr. Rogers in my house.  My brother had a trolley toy with finger puppets that were like the puppets on the show.  The trolley actually went "ding ding ding" when you rolled it on the ground.  It was an awesome toy.

Ah Good Times

We got home today from Atlanta.  We went to the concert Thursday night--it was great.  I admit, I have never let down by a Jimmy Buffett concert.  Even in all the craziness or perhaps because of all the craziness, we enjoyed every minute.  Jimmy Buffett concert number 9!

We spent yesterday hanging out in Atlanta.  We spent the morning at IKEA.  We ate some chili dogs at The Varsity with a frosted orange drink.  Ended in day at The Mellow Mushroom, we had humus and Jerk Chicken Pizza.

I enjoyed the days away.  Of course, the concert was why we came to town.  It was nice to relax, swim in the pool, and eat some different foods for a few days as well.

Fun times and Fun times ahead

Summer is here in Madison, AL.  The girls have had swimming lessons this week.  This year there has not been one tear and everyone is learning a lot.  I made a goal for myself to walk for the first 30 minutes of the lesson.  I even had the other mom's wearing their walking shoes to walk with me the past two days.

Very exciting news is tomorrow Josh and I head to Atlanta to see Jimmy Buffett for the ninth time.  Good times to be had there for sure.  I love a Jimmy Buffett concert.

On a sad note, my friend's mom is in the hospital.  She has been battling cancer.  I have been there--I know it is a hard place to be.  I wish I could make this better, but I know it is beyond my control.
